Discarded mobile phones can leak toxic waste into river systems, contaminating agricultural land, they contain dangerous chemicals such as cadmium which can be highly carcinogenic.

You can get points for recycling mobile phones and inkjet cartridges. Please note that the prices given below are actually in "Boots Points" and not in pounds.

What the Recycling Companies Do

Many of the used phones that they buy are reconditioned and prepared for reselling. MoPay, for example, claim that around 97% of the phones they receive can be reconditioned and sold again. These phones are mostly sold to developing countries, or countries where the vast choice of new and technically advanced phones isn't available as it is here in UK. By sending these phones to places such as Africa, the recycling companies are providing a much needed service to many communities in those countries. Landline telephone networks are either limited or non-existent, and very often an recycled mobile phone from Europe is the only convenient way to communicate over distances.

Where a phone can't be reconditioned and prepared for resale, it is usually stripped down for parts and materials. Many mobile phones contain precious metals and raw materials (in very small amounts), for example in the circuit board. Some of the phone recyclers strip the phones to get these materials, in order to sell them on.

As for phones and parts that can't be re-used, the a professional and responsible recycling company will dispose of these parts in the correct manner, under Waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) Directive. You can read more about the WEEE Directive here.
